The Terra di Bari is a subregion of central Puglia. The expression defines, from a merely geographical point of view, the flat area between the Murge in the south-west and the Adriatic Sea in the north-east between the mouth of the Ofanto and the city of Fasano.
With the same denomination, from 1231 to 1861, an administrative subdivision was indicated comprising a larger territory, extended to a large part of the Murge and subsequently called the province of Bari.
The Adriatic-Bari coast and its immediate hinterland, especially during the Roman Empire and the X-XIII centuries of the Middle Ages, have experienced a great development for the transit function carried out. Different centers such as Canosa, Trani, Molfetta, Bari, Monopoli, Egnazia being located along the Via Traiana, an Adriatic variant of the famous Via Appia, had a great demographic and economic growth. The role of bridge with the East was performed again during the Crusades period. To go to the Holy Land, thousands of pilgrims flowed from central-western Europe and after passing by the Sanctuary of Saint Mikael on the Gargano, they embarked in one of the Apulian ports to go to the Holy Land. Many city centers date back to this period.
Canosa, Egnazia and Canne take us back with their vestiges to the Roman period and the first centuries of Christianity, or even Peucetian ones as in the case of Ruvo. Despite the high population density, there are many beautiful beaches along the coast and in the case of Polignano and Monopoli they have the reputation of being spectacular.
Castles, beaches, historic centers, "puli", dolmens, olive groves ... the Terra di Bari is a land to be discovered.
In this group of 15 destinations proposed in this itinerary without doubt the most important ones are Bari and Trani. The old city of Bari and Trani with its beautiful cathedral facing the sea, can already occupy a whole day each. In fact, the Terra di Bari does not stop only at these two places. The wealth of historical and cultural places is enormous. In addition to the historic centers of the coastal cities of Puglia, there are the dolmens of Bisceglie, Neolithic and Bronze Age funerary monuments, the archaeological parks of Egnazia, Canne and Monte Sannace, places of historical memory such as the tavern where the historic "Barletta Challenge" was consumed, the enchanting beaches of Polignano and Monopoli, olive groves as far as the eye can see in the countryside of Bari, museums celebrating local history and much more. The Terra di Bari has a great variety of beautiful and interesting places to visit. Certainly a one-day excursion limits the possibilities to a few places if not just one but at least you have a great variety of choice and several one-day excursions can be dedicated to this part of Puglia.
